This is a question we get asked a lot about the Estate EIN. It’s a very great question, we are going to cover in this post.
The Difference Between Having An Estate EIN Start With a 45 and 81
The first two digits of an estate EIN, known as the EIN Prefix, does not affect the status of the EIN; it only indicates which campus/location assigned the EIN.
For example, if the campus/location is Andover, your estate EIN prefix would begin with either 10 or 12. If the location is Atlanta, your EIN prefix can either start with 60 or 67. If the campus/location is Philadelphia, then the start of your estate EIN prefix can begin with any of these numbers: 33, 39, 41, 42, 43, 46, 48, 62, 63, 64, 66, 68, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 91, 92, 93, 98, 99. See the below chart to learn about the different EIN prefixes.

The EIN prefix does not affect your estate EIN status, as that is dependent on how your estate EIN was established; an estate EIN under your legal ALL CAPITAL NAME or under your business.
All estate EIN’s obtained from A.W.A.R.E typically start with 81 and can sometimes start with 45.
